The Durban Call to Action is a document that emphasizes the need for urgent action to end child labour. Its goal is to accelerate progress on ending child labour, after years of reversal due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global vulnerabilities.

Deputy President of the Nelson Mandela Children's Parliament, Mary-Ann Pretorius, believes that children should be part of decision making processes.

A total of 70% of all children engaged in child labour were in agriculture and this is the only sector in recent years that has seen an increase in child labour - delegates were told during the 5^th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour. 

If most countries put proper social protection measures in place, child labour can decline by 15 million by the end of 2022, thus allowing a significant improvement in sustainable development goals (SDG) 8.7.

The 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour currently underway in Durban until Friday, 20 May 2022, will host a child participation session for the first time in its history. 

The fight against child labour is about social justice, creating a prosperous future, and hope for the children, according to Nxesi.

Many speakers outlined the urgent need to recover the progress that had been made in many regions prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the 5th global conference on the elimination of child labour, the first to be held in  Africa, and the last one before the 2025 deadline for the elimination of child labour set under the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. We are in the right place,  at the right time.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 5th Global Conference.

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu will visit a Durban-based Child and Youth Care Centre, which seeks to protect them from child labour and other forms of exploitation.

According to the Government of South Africa, the Durban International Convention Centre is ready to accommodate all Delegates as usual, despite recent flooding in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

The 5th Global Conference is happening from 15 to 20 May 2022. Why does it matter? For the first time, an African country will host the event. The hybrid modality means that you can participate from anywhere in the world. And, most importantly, we have to act now - before it's too late for millions of kids.
